People, training and supervision in practice

At Sonoma, my responsibilities covered airport operations, facilities maintenance, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF), security and badging, regulatory compliance, construction coordination and contractor performance—including parking and landscaping services. I also served as the airport’s Safety Coordinator and was responsible for training all airport staff, including Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) training.

People and partners

Direct supervision included the Operations Supervisor, Airport Maintenance Worker role, security specialist and administrative staff member. I was responsible for training all airport staff, including IIPP training, alongside daily priorities and process improvement. I coordinated with FAA/TSA representatives, county departments, airlines, tenants, contractors and mutual-aid partners.

Readiness and accountability

Managed multiple triennial and tabletop exercises under Part 139 and Part 1542. Prepared incident and investigative reports for DHS/TSA.

AirBadge

Change management · Process improvement

Primary operational contact in an early development and implementation partnership, translating airport badging requirements into workflows and coordinating the audit approach with TSA.

Result Badge audit: 6 months → 1½–2 months

An airport-wide transition from spreadsheets to tracked digital workflows.

Full badge audit duration fell from about six months before AirBadge to about one and a half to two months after. TSA approved the airport’s audit process and methodology within its Airport Security Program.
Read case studyProblem · My role · Actions · Result · Learning

Problem

The airport relied on spreadsheets, correspondence and manual follow-up to track badge audits. A full audit could take around six months, and it was difficult to maintain a clear view of outstanding responses. COVID added another reason to make more of the process accessible remotely.

My role

I was the airport’s primary operational point of contact, working with the founder to explain requirements, shape workflows and coordinate implementation.

What I did and the tools involved

  • Translated airport operational needs and applicable airport security requirements (Part 1542) into workflow requirements for the developer.
  • Helped shape communication, response tracking and audit follow-up around how the airport actually worked.
  • Coordinated with TSA on the audit process and methodology used within our Airport Security Program.
  • Helped move staff and badge holders toward online processes, with mobile access and online training as part of the broader transition.
  • Supported development and implementation over 2019–2023.

Tools: AirBadge, online applications and audit workflows, digital communications and training materials.

Result

The full badge audit fell from six months to 1½–2 months. The team gained clearer visibility into outstanding responses and reduced reliance on manual spreadsheet tracking. TSA approved the airport’s audit process and methodology within its Airport Security Program.

What I learned

The value came from connecting the software to the real operational and regulatory process. A useful system needs to support the people responsible for following through, not simply collect information.

Problem

Paper forms limited the detail and visibility available from inspections. Findings needed clearer locations, photographic context and a stronger connection to the maintenance work that followed.

My role

I evaluated providers and led implementation with the Operations Supervisor, involving operations and maintenance staff and coordinating the approach with the FAA inspector.

What I did and the tools involved

  • Compared specialist systems for regulatory fit, usability, airport size and a reasonable budget.
  • Configured inspection forms and the work-order process.
  • Arranged iPads for staff to capture photographs and geolocated findings.
  • Worked with the Operations Supervisor to train staff, establish procedures and roll out the system.
  • Communicated the transition and reporting approach to the FAA inspector.

Tools: App 139, iPads, photographs, location pins, digital inspection forms and work-order tracking. Introduction: 2017–2018.

Result

Staff could document findings more precisely, link them to work orders and track progress. The digital record made inspection evidence clearer to review and improved accountability for follow-through. The system remained in use when I left.

What I learned

I learned to assess technology against the actual operating problem: whether staff can use it, whether findings lead to action, and whether the record supports regulatory review.

Problem

Airport purchasing decisions can require navigating local policy, funding conditions and multiple procurement routes. I wanted to help staff identify a buying path and understand the requirements behind it.

My role

Founder and product lead, April–October 2026. I owned the vision, product architecture and buying-path methodology, and personally built the initial deterministic minimum viable product (MVP): a usable system driven by defined rules. This was my own venture, rather than paid client work.

What I did and the tools involved

  • Turned airport procurement and funding knowledge into requirements, decision rules and product workflows.
  • Built the initial MVP with AI-assisted development, then directed and worked alongside a contract developer over two months.
  • The developer implemented regulatory-document retrieval, AI-agent workflows, login and security improvements, with my direction on domain requirements and product behavior.
  • Built the website, calls to action and marketing journey, gaining practical experience in design, publishing and marketing.
  • Created custom AI skills for TarmacSync and tested them across different models and agents.
  • Secured $2,000 in Neon service credits and $2,000 in Google service credits to cover platform costs.

Tools and methods: Claude Code, Codex, VS Code, HTML, command-line tools, Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations, AI agents and cross-model testing.

Result

Reached a usable MVP and demonstrated it to peers. Development is paused before a customer launch. The $4,000 in external support was platform service credits.

What I learned

How to turn domain expertise into a usable product, direct specialist development, test AI-assisted workflows and connect product design to a marketing journey.

Problem

Construction changed passenger routes, work areas and contractor interfaces in phases. The airport still needed to support commercial flights, passenger movement, security requirements and daily staff responsibilities while adapting to COVID conditions.

My role

I held an operational management role connecting airport staff, contractors and regulatory requirements. My responsibility was operational and security coordination within the overall modernization project.

What I did and the tools involved

  • Coordinated operational impacts as construction phases and passenger movements changed.
  • Worked across airport staff, contractors and external partners to address changing conditions.
  • Adapted operational arrangements to passenger-service, safety and COVID requirements.
  • Prepared Airport Security Program (ASP) amendments and Changed Conditions documentation under TSA Part 1542.
  • Managed daily priorities alongside the demands of construction.

Tools and working methods: phased operational planning, contractor coordination, operating procedures, staff communication and regulatory documentation.

Result

Supported continuity of commercial airport operations through phased construction and COVID restrictions. The modernization opened in 2022. This is a shared project outcome; my contribution was the operational and security coordination described above.

What I learned

Plans have to work in the live operation. My responsibility was to connect the changing project environment with what staff, contractors and passengers needed that day.

05 / Practical questions

Where I can contribute

Are you only looking for aviation roles?
No. I’m open to operations, procurement, contract administration and consulting roles in aviation and beyond. Logistics, facilities, public-sector procurement and service organizations all involve work I know: coordinating delivery, evaluating suppliers, supporting people and maintaining clear records.
What does your airport experience bring to another industry?
Experience balancing service continuity, regulation, staff priorities and contractor delivery in a live environment. I can help define requirements, compare tools, coordinate stakeholders, train users and keep follow-up visible.
When can you start, and how do your hours overlap with the US?
I’m available to start on 1 January 2027. My Cyprus working window is 08:00–18:00. For most of the year, that is 01:00–11:00 US Eastern and 22:00 the previous day–08:00 US Pacific. It gives two hours of overlap with a 09:00–17:00 Eastern workday. During the brief spring and autumn daylight-saving transition gaps, Eastern overlap increases to three hours. European working days align much more closely.
Where are you based, and what does “1099” mean?
I’m based in Cyprus and hold US and French citizenship, with the right to work in the US and EU. I’m open to remote employment and independent contract work with organizations able to engage someone working from Cyprus. “1099” is US terminology commonly used for independent contractor engagements; outside the US, freelance or consulting contracts are the equivalent type of opportunity I’m considering.
